Shop local. Support independent: Why your eye "insurance" is keeping you from doing this
Wondering why we don’t accept your eye insurance plan at Muze Eye Bar? Let’s break down the reasons behind why we don’t accept insurance. Buckle up! It is a complicated issue in our industry, but trust us, we’re the experts! Let’s go down the rabbit hole together.
We do not accept eye “insurance” at Muze because they are corporations and we are all better off without it. Let’s start by calling it what it is- eye “insurance” is simply a corporate-owned discount plan that funnels purchases to corporate-owned products. Eye insurances are vertically integrated into eye care and eye wear. I have worked directly with eye “insurances” at my optometry clinic, Boston Mountain Eye Care, for ten years. I know their structure very well and the bottom line is this- eye “insurances” are large corporations who want to squeeze dollars from the eye care industry, its customers and their communities. They do not benefit our community or local economy in any way. They feign savings while driving up the cost of the products they manufacture and sell. It’s shareholders over communities.
Let’s look at specific examples. Eyemed is owned by EssilorLuxottica, who owns a vast amount of frame lines and lens companies. VSP is the same- they produce frames and lenses. Not surprisingly, these companies only give large price breaks to customers who buy the products they own. So … insurance customers pay monthly premiums for an “insurance” plan that incentivizes them to spend dollars on products they manufacture, at labs they own?! Yuck!
Prices at Muze are lower because we don’t accept “insurance”. Our lenses are more cost effective and higher quality. We edge and mount our lenses more accurately than insurance labs. Our frames are of higher quality as we are not obliged to carry cheap, poorly-made “insurance-owned” frames. They will last so much longer than the fast fashion frames insurance companies produce. This will allow you to grow a luxury eyewear collection over time. An eye wear collection that is built to last. All Muze frames are independent lines. This means the producer is not tied to any other aspect of the eye care industry. Not surprisingly, this leads to fair pricing and higher quality frame production. Independent frame manufacturers are accountable to quality and price, unlike “insurance” owned options. This means customers wind up with a higher quality product at a fair purchase price. Further, independent lines are often carbon neutral and support nationwide initiatives such as mental health outreach in America. They value and benefit local communities more than corporate insurances do.
Our lens prices are at or below insurance price points. Our frames are of much higher quality and will prove a better visual experience while lasting through time. We are proud of this and our decision to not accept eye insurance has been integral in allowing us to operate with such a high standard. Please come by and get your hands on our eyewear. See for yourself. You are better off outside of the corporate insurance monopoly. Support independence and be rewarded with exceptional quality.
